The host of the International Summer School on Radar / SAR is the

Fraunhofer Institute for High Frequency Physics and Radar Techniques FHR.

Fraunhofer premises in WachtbergThe Fraunhofer FHR is one of 60 institutes of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V. It is located near the southern border of North Rhine-Westphalia on the hill 'Wachtberg' (the surrounding municipality has the same name) near Bonn. Its conspicuous characteristic is the "Kugel" (ball), the world´s largest radome with a diameter of 49 metres, which houses the space observation radar TIRA (tracking and imaging radar).

The Fraunhofer FHR develops concepts, methods and systems for electromagnetic sensor systems – particularly in the field of radar. This is done in close conjunction with novel signal processing methods and innovative technologies in the frequency range from VHF to lower Terahertz. The institute’s expertise – reinforced by highly sophisticated experimental systems that are developed and maintained in-house – covers almost every aspect of modern radar technology. Radar and related high frequency systems form a key technology for defence and security. Hence the institute does not only provide a significant share in counselling and consultation to the German Ministry of Defence but it also supports – through its in-house developed systems – the capabilities of the armed forces.
